PASTOR’S POST

Pastor’s Post – ‘A Piece of the Action’ (for 2012)

The first Sunday in February is ‘Service Sunday’ for many Churches of the Brethren. It is a day when we celebrate our commitment to service. Even more it is a day when we remind ourselves of our commitment to active service.

It was very apparent at our annual retreat that we have a congregation that hears God’s call through scripture and is full of ideas about how we can live into our call. The other 11 months of this year will show if we are as energetic as we are vocal. J

We plan to have a poster to highlight what each commission is doing in the current month toward the goals that were discerned during the retreat. Commissions have already been meeting and putting those ideas into concrete plans. Now it is up to all of us to join in adding our limbs and energy to our voices and ideas. You comments and contributions continue to be welcome and are best addressed to the chairs of each commission; JoAnn C, Nurture, Warren W, Stewards, Minnie S, Witness. I am very thankful for everyone who participated in the retreat or in the pew discussions that followed. It is exciting to know God is ‘moving in our midst’ and we can be part of the action.

Keep the scripture focus for the year before you. Memorize the concluding words of ‘benediction’ and let us ask God to help us live into all we are called to be.

I Peter 4:8-11 Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

The following are a few upcoming opportunities for service. Look for details in this newsletter:

  • Invite someone to join you at church on February 19 for ‘Invite a Friend Sunday’ and to stay for the Chili lunch as a way to offer your neighbors the Good News.
  • Sign up to be a Bingo Caller (2 per month) on the last Sunday evening of the month atSunriseRetirementCenter.
  • Give an hour in the nursery, protecting, nurturing and serving the youngest members of our congregation.
